The police allegedly seized unaccounted cash worth Rs 26 lakh from a luxury car near a checkpoint in Lucknow. Three people have been arrested in connection with recovery.

The cash was allegedly found hidden in a secret compartment inside the boot of a BMW. According to the police, the seizure was made on the intervening night of Friday, July 3, and Saturday, July 4.

During a routine vehicle inspection, police personnel noticed a black-tinted Haryana-registered BMW and a Scorpio parked under suspicious circumstances, with three young men standing nearby.

When the police asked them to produce the vehicles' documents, the trio allegedly failed to present any valid papers and appeared nervous during questioning. Further interrogation at the spot aroused suspicion, prompting the police personnel to carry out a thorough search of the two cars.

This allegedly led to the discovery of a concealed compartment inside the trunk of the BMW. When it was opened, as many as 52 bundles of Rs 500 notes were found stashed inside, police said.

When the suspects failed to disclose the source of the money or produce any legal documents, the police alerted the Income Tax Department about the large sum of cash recovered.

Upon receiving information, tax officials reached the spot promptly and initiated a formal investigation. Both the cars have been seized by the police. The police and the IT Department are jointly trying to ascertain whom the cash actually belongs to and where it was being transported.
