BJP MLA Ratna Debnath, mother of the R G Kar Hospital rape-murder victim, on Sunday expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the investigation and alleged that corruption in West Bengal's medical colleges had not declined despite a change in government, the Press Trust of India reported.
Debnath said she would approach Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to seek justice for her daughter and action over alleged corruption in medical colleges.
“Even though there has been a change in government, the same people are still around. Corruption has not come down,” the Panihati legislator told reporters in Kolkata, according to PTI.
Questioning the Central Bureau of Investigation's handling of the R G Kar Hospital case, Debnath said her family had never sought an investigation by the central agency and alleged that it had failed to make progress. “If they cannot do the job, they should step aside,” she said.
The victim's parents have repeatedly voiced dissatisfaction with the investigation, maintaining that people they believe were involved in the crime have not yet been brought to justice. The case was transferred to the CBI after the Calcutta High Court took suo motu cognisance of the matter and ordered the agency to investigate it.
Debnath also claimed that she had received several files related to alleged corruption in different medical colleges and wanted the allegations investigated. “I will take up the matter with the chief minister,” she told PTI.
Debnath had joined the BJP, saying she believed it would be difficult to secure justice for her daughter without a change in government. She subsequently won the Panihati Assembly seat in the 2026 election. She has now said she will raise both the R G Kar investigation and the alleged corruption in medical colleges with the chief minister.
