From house help to MLA: BJP's Kalita Majhi wins seat as saffron wave sweeps Bengal
Kalita Majhi, a domestic worker from Guskara, won the Ausgram seat as the BJP swept West Bengal. Her victory underscored the party's push for grassroots candidates amid a wider political shift in the state.

- Majhi polled 1,07,692 votes and defeated Shyama Prasanna Lohar by 12,535
- The Guskara resident earlier lost the 2021 contest by 11,815 votes
- BJP won 206 seats, ending Trinamool Congress's 15-year rule in Bengal
In one of the most compelling personal victories of the West Bengal Assembly elections, Kalita Majhi, a domestic worker earning 2,500 a month, has been elected MLA from the Ausgram constituency. Her win comes alongside a sweeping mandate for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which has stormed to power in the state. Majhi secured 1,07,692 votes, defeating Shyama Prasanna Lohar by a margin of 12,535 votes.
A resident of Guskara Municipality, Majhi worked as a domestic help in four households before entering politics. Her candidature had drawn attention for its grassroots nature, and her victory now stands as a rare example of socio-economic mobility through electoral politics.
She had earlier contested the 2021 Assembly elections but lost to Abhedananda Thander of the Trinamool Congress by 11,815 votes. The BJP’s decision to renominate her reflected confidence in her local connect, which appears to have translated into electoral gains this time.
BJP’S SWEEP RESHAPES BENGAL POLITICS
Majhi’s win comes amid a sweeping victory for the BJP, which secured 206 seats in the 294-member Assembly, crossing the two-thirds majority mark and ending the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state. The scale of the victory signals a structural shift in West Bengal’s political landscape, with the BJP breaching its last major eastern stronghold.
The mandate also carries national significance, marking the first time since 1972 that West Bengal is set to be governed by the same party that is in power at the Centre.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the result, saying the “Lotus has bloomed in West Bengal,” while crediting the party’s organisational depth and voter outreach.
SETBACK FOR TRINAMOOL, MAMATA LOSES KEY SEAT
In a major upset, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee lost the Bhabanipur seat to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, adding symbolic weight to the party’s victory.
Banerjee alleged irregularities in several constituencies and said the Trinamool would “bounce back”, even as the results indicated erosion in the party’s support across multiple regions.
A SYMBOLIC WIN WITH DEEPER MEANING
The BJP’s rise in Bengal has been gradual but decisive, from a marginal presence in 2011 to a strong challenger in 2021, and now the ruling party. The 2026 verdict reflects not just an electoral win but a deeper political realignment.
Within that larger shift, Kalita Majhi’s journey – from working in kitchens to entering the state Assembly – stands out as a powerful example of grassroots democracy reshaping leadership from the ground up.
