CBSE tightens student detail correction rules, warns schools over incomplete requests

CBSE has tightened the process for correcting students' demographic details, telling schools to submit complete, certified records for every change. The Board says repeated checks already exist from Classes 9 to 12, and warns that incomplete or direct requests can slow cases and will now be rejected.

The Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE, has tightened the process for correcting students’ demographic details, directing schools to submit complete and properly certified documents for any changes. The Board has warned that incomplete correction requests will be rejected.

In a circular dated September 23, 2026, CBSE said schools must ensure that students’ demographic details are accurate across admission forms, scholar registers, admission-withdrawal registers and transfer certificates.

The verification process begins with Class 9 registration. Schools and parents are required to check and certify the details, after which schools can use the correction window provided by CBSE to rectify errors.

Schools must also download registration cards and provide them to students for verification. Before submitting the List of Candidates (LOC), schools are required to check the details again and obtain confirmation from parents.

STUDENTS GET MULTIPLE OPPORTUNITIES TO CHECK DETAILS

CBSE said the verification process continues at different stages through Classes 9 to 12. Before examinations, students, parents and school principals must confirm that the demographic details mentioned on the admit cards are correct.

Schools can also approach CBSE for corrections before results are declared. Similar checks are carried out during Classes 11 and 12.

According to the Board, students and parents therefore get around 20 opportunities during Classes 9 to 12 to verify and correct their demographic details.

INCOMPLETE CORRECTION REQUESTS WILL BE REJECTED

Despite these repeated checks, CBSE said it continues to receive a large number of requests for changes after results are declared. The board said several requests are submitted without complete supporting documents. Some schools fail to provide records from all previous schools attended by a student, while others submit documents that are unclear or contain multiple cuttings.

CBSE also pointed out that some schools do not respond when additional documents are sought, further delaying the process. The board has now directed schools to ensure that student records are completely accurate and that parents’ confirmation is obtained before submitting any correction request.

Schools must provide all relevant, certified records from previous schools attended by the student. CBSE said requests with incomplete documentation will be summarily rejected.

CBSE ASKS STUDENTS TO ROUTE REQUESTS THROUGH SCHOOLS

The board also said some students have approached CBSE directly, issued legal notices or moved courts seeking corrections in their demographic details.

CBSE has asked schools to guide students to submit such requests through the respective schools. It said direct requests can delay the process, particularly when the required school records are not available with the Board.
