NCERT clarifies Class 9 math syllabus: Topics not dropped, shifted across chapters

NCERT said its draft Class 9 Mathematics syllabus has not dropped topics but redistributed some across chapters. It said the final version, due in October, will reflect feedback and focus on competencies over chapter counts.

The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has clarified its draft Class 9 Mathematics syllabus, saying that no overall topics were dropped and that several concepts were instead integrated into other chapters.

The clarification comes after concerns were raised over the structure and content of the draft syllabus, including the treatment of Lines and Angles, Euclidean geometry and the addition of algorithms.

NCERT said the syllabus released earlier was only a draft proposal intended to seek feedback from teachers, students, authors and educators. The final syllabus is expected to be released in October by NCERT/ CBSE.

NCERT SAYS TOPICS WERE INTEGRATED, NOT REMOVED

According to NCERT, the school curriculum under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023 is not meant to be assessed simply by counting the number of chapters in a textbook.

Instead, the curriculum is organised around curricular goals, competencies and learning outcomes.

“In the NCF-SE design, Curricular Goals state the broader aims of a curricular area (subject) at a stage; Competencies describe what learners should be able to attain at the end of that stage; and Learning Outcomes provide observable milestones for planning teaching–learning and assessment in every grade,” NCERT said.

“Textbooks are one of the teaching–learning resources that help realise these Goals, Competencies and Outcomes through a coherent organisation of content, activities, examples and opportunities for application. The purpose of a textbook chapter is to support competency development; chapterisation is merely a pedagogical arrangement, not an end in itself,” it added.

NCERT said some concepts that were earlier expected to appear as standalone chapters have been incorporated into other chapters of the Class 9 Mathematics textbook.

For instance, key ideas and applications related to Lines and Angles have been included in the Grade 9 Part 2 chapters titled Propositions and Their Converses and Quadrilaterals. NCERT noted that Lines and Angles already has a dedicated chapter in Grade 6 Ganita Prakash.

The council also clarified the treatment of Euclidean geometry, which covers concepts related to flat, two-dimensional geometry, including polygons, circles, parallel lines and intersecting lines.

Rather than retaining a traditional standalone chapter focused on axioms, theorems and proofs, NCERT said the concepts are covered across Chapters 5, 6, 9, 12 and 13 of the Grade 9 Mathematics textbook.

The council said this approach followed consultations and feedback from teachers and educators, with the aim of helping students develop conceptual understanding and apply geometric ideas across different contexts.

ADDITION OF ALGORITHMS TO CLASS 9 MATHS CLARIFIED

NCERT also explained the inclusion of a chapter on algorithms in Grade 9 Mathematics.

The council said the rapid development of artificial intelligence has increased the importance of students understanding mathematical ideas related to algorithms, data structures and running-time efficiency.

It said computational thinking is part of the direction set by NEP 2020 and argued that students should encounter the mathematical concepts underlying AI as part of their mathematics education.

NCERT added that a separate module on AI is also being developed, but said mathematical concepts linked to AI should also be explored in mathematics classrooms.

NCERT stressed that textbooks are only one of the resources used to achieve curricular goals. Their chapters are designed to organise content, activities, examples and applications in a way that supports competency development.

NCERT said schools, teachers and boards should therefore plan classroom teaching and assessment with reference to competencies rather than relying only on the number of textbook chapters.

The final syllabus, which is expected to incorporate feedback received on the draft, will provide a clearer picture of the curriculum framework for schools and students from the upcoming academic session.
