Tension prevailed in Telangana's Hyderabad after an egg was allegedly thrown near a Goddess Durga idol immersion procession in the early hours of Sunday, triggering protests by devotees and members of Hindu organisations who demanded strict action against those responsible.

The incident took place at around 2 am within the limits of Madannapet Police Station in the city's Old City, when the procession organised by the Veer Savarkar Nava Yuva Sangham was passing through a lane. The egg fell near the procession, a police official said.

Following the incident, participants in the procession and some residents staged a protest. BJP leaders, members of Hindu organisations and a large number of youths also gathered at the spot, holding bhajans and a dharna to demand action against the accused.

Police registered a case under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage the religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.

Police personnel from Madannapet Police Station rushed to the spot after receiving information about the incident and took steps to bring the situation under control.

Senior police officials visited the area and spoke to the procession organisers. One suspect was taken into custody, and police were examining CCTV footage to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and identify those responsible.

Police said the situation was peaceful and urged the public not to spread rumours. Further investigation was underway.

BJP LEADER ALLEGES TARGETING OF HINDU PROCESSIONS

BJP spokesperson Veerender Yadav alleged that certain miscreants were deliberately targeting Hindus through such incidents.

He also accused the police of targeting Hindu religious processions by imposing restrictions and resorting to lathi charges during processions across Hyderabad.

Members of Hindu organisations and devotees demanded strict action against those responsible for the alleged act.

The investigation is underway, and further details are awaited.
