India's 80th Independence Day draws global celebrations and diplomatic goodwill

Indians worldwide marked the country's 80th Independence Day with flag hoisting, cultural events and the Suryapath Tiranga relay. Greetings from key partners underscored growing goodwill and closer ties with New Delhi.

Indians across the world marked the country’s 80th Independence Day on Saturday with flag hoisting, cultural events and community gatherings, while India’s global partners sent greetings and reaffirmed their commitment to closer ties with New Delhi. Celebrations were held across the Pacific islands, East Asia, Europe, the Gulf and the Americas.

Indian missions joined the commemoration through the ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ campaign, under which the Tricolour was hoisted successively from east to west, from Fiji to San Francisco. Messages also came from leaders in the US, Russia, Israel and Nepal, while France, Russia and Australia conveyed greetings and underlined cooperation with India.

In Washington, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio greeted the people of India and said bilateral ties were “stronger than ever” because of the personal relationship between President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. From Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent greetings to President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Modi and expressed confidence that the constructive bilateral partnership would help enhance international security and stability.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog congratulated India and its people, and called for strengthening the “beautiful friendship” between the two countries. In Kathmandu, Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah extended greetings and best wishes to Prime Minister Modi and the people of India on the occasion.

In London, the High Commission of India marked the day with the ‘Suryapath Tiranga’ global relay, alongside the traditional flag-hoisting ceremony. The Tricolour’s symbolic journey followed the rising sun across the world as Indian missions raised the flag in sequence from east to west.

In the US, diaspora group Foundation of Indian Americans New England held an Independence Day event in Boston that was praised by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey issued a special proclamation declaring August 15, 2026, as ‘India Day’ in the state.

From diaspora-led events to ceremonies at Indian missions and greetings from partner countries, India’s 80th Independence Day was observed across the world with celebrations around the Tricolour and messages of friendship with New Delhi.
