Gangster killed, associate injured in Tarn Taran police encounter

A suspected gangster was killed and his associate injured in an encounter with a joint team of the Anti-Gangster Task Force and Tarn Taran Police on Monday evening.

The deceased was identified as Kashmir Singh, alias Sunny or Pungi, a resident of Muradpur in Tarn Taran who was wanted in several cases. His injured associate, Gursewak Singh, is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

According to Tarn Taran Police, Kashmir Singh faced around four criminal cases, including those related to drug trafficking and attempted murder. He had also allegedly shot and injured police personnel in two cases.

The police team spotted Kashmir Singh and his associate riding a motorcycle. When officers began chasing them, the two allegedly opened fire.

The suspects abandoned the motorcycle and tried to escape after police returned fire. They allegedly fired at the pursuing team again, with one bullet striking an officer. He escaped injury as he was wearing a bulletproof jacket.

Both suspects were injured in the ensuing exchange of fire and taken to a hospital, where Kashmir Singh was declared dead. Gursewak Singh remains under treatment.

Police claimed to have recovered a pistol and a .30-bore handgun from the scene. An investigation into the encounter and the suspects’ criminal records is under way.
