Taco Bell under investigation as lettuce linked to major parasite outbreak in US
According to a report by The Washington Post, US health officials are investigating whether Taco Bell restaurants may be linked to a major cyclosporiasis outbreak. While no connection has been confirmed, lettuce and salad greens have emerged as possible sources of the infection.

- Officials have not confirmed Taco Bell, suppliers or ingredients are linked
- Selected restaurants stopped serving lettuce, cilantro, onions, guacamole and pico de gallo
- Michigan has reported over 2,600 cases, its biggest outbreak on record
A major food safety investigation is underway in the United States after health officials began examining whether Taco Bell restaurants could be linked to a growing outbreak of cyclosporiasis, a parasitic infection that causes severe gastrointestinal illness. According to a report by The Washington Post, federal and state agencies are reviewing whether the fast-food chain may have contributed to the outbreak, which has already sickened thousands of people, particularly in Michigan.
Health authorities have not confirmed any direct link between Taco Bell and the outbreak. However, the investigation has gained attention after several Taco Bell restaurants in the Detroit area temporarily stopped serving fresh ingredients such as lettuce, cilantro, onions, pico de gallo and guacamole. Notices displayed at some outlets reportedly informed customers that the items were unavailable because of a "national recall."
Officials say the investigation is ongoing, and current evidence suggests lettuce or other leafy salad greens may be the source of the outbreak. However, no specific food item, grower, supplier or restaurant has been identified as responsible.
WHAT IS BEING INVESTIGATED?
According to The Washington Post, investigators from federal and state health agencies are examining whether Taco Bell restaurants may have played a role in the spread of Cyclospora cayetanensis, the parasite that causes cyclosporiasis.
While Taco Bell has come under scrutiny, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not announced any recall involving the chain, nor has it publicly linked the company to the outbreak.
The investigation remains focused on identifying the source of the contaminated food rather than placing responsibility on any particular business.
TACO BELL RESPONDS
In a statement, Taco Bell said the health and safety of its customers remains its highest priority.
The company said public health officials have not confirmed a connection between Taco Bell, any of its restaurants, suppliers or ingredients and the outbreak.
As a precaution, Taco Bell has voluntarily and temporarily removed a limited number of fresh ingredients from select restaurants while authorities continue their investigation.
MICHIGAN REPORTS RECORD NUMBER OF CASES
Michigan has reported more than 2,600 cases of cyclosporiasis, making it the largest outbreak ever recorded in the state and one of the biggest seen in the United States in recent years.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said preliminary findings point to lettuce or salad greens as the most likely source of the infections. However, officials stressed that the investigation is still underway and that other foods cannot yet be ruled out.
No deaths linked to the outbreak have been reported.
WHAT IS CYCLOSPORIASIS?
Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis.
People usually become infected after eating contaminated fresh produce or drinking contaminated water. Foods commonly linked to past outbreaks include lettuce, leafy greens, herbs and other fruits and vegetables that are often eaten raw.
Unlike many bacterial foodborne illnesses, Cyclospora is not usually spread directly from one person to another because the parasite must first mature in the environment before it becomes infectious.
SYMPTOMS TO WATCH FOR
Symptoms generally develop about one week after infection and can last for several weeks if left untreated.
Common symptoms include:
- Watery diarrhoea
- Explosive diarrhoea
- Stomach cramps
- Nausea
- Loss of appetite
- Fatigue
- Bloating
- Weight loss
- Mild fever
People experiencing persistent diarrhoea should seek medical attention, as prolonged illness can lead to dehydration.
HOW IS THE INFECTION TREATED?
Cyclosporiasis is usually treated with prescription antibiotics. Most patients recover fully after treatment, although symptoms may continue for weeks if the infection is not diagnosed promptly.
Doctors also recommend drinking plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
Health officials are continuing to trace food supply chains to identify where the contamination occurred. So far, investigators have not identified any specific grower, farm, distributor or supplier connected to the outbreak.
While Taco Bell remains part of the investigation, authorities have emphasised that no evidence has yet confirmed the restaurant chain as the source of the outbreak. The final findings will depend on ongoing laboratory testing and food trace-back investigations.
