A tempo driver was allegedly manhandled and beaten by a traffic police constable amid an argument over a fine in Mumbai. A purported video of the assault has also gone viral on social media. The aggrieved man, identified as Vishwajeet Singh, had parked his lorry on the roadside to have a meal, according to his family.
However, while he was gone, a challan was issued against his vehicle.
Singh's family said he received a notification about the fine on his mobile phone and, subsequently, asked a constable present at the spot why the fine had been issued.
They have alleged that the traffic cop responded to the query with abusive language and that the exchange escalated when Singh protested.
The verbal exchange rapidly turned violent as the constable physically assaulted the tempo driver, per the family. The video circulating on social media shows the accused cop punching Singh and pulling him by the collar.
A second traffic policeman was also present there. He, however, appeared passive rather than engaging in the assault.
Eyewitnesses said the situation was eventually brought under control when bystanders intervened in the altercation.
Singh and his family have demanded strict action in the matter.
