FAMILY ALLEGES MURDER OVER DOWRY

Deepika died after falling from the terrace of her three-storey matrimonial home in Greater Noida amid alleged harassment by her in-laws over dowry demands. Her family has claimed that she was murdered and that it was neither a case of suicide nor an accident.

Police have arrested her 26-year-old husband, whom she married around one-and-a-half years ago, and her father-in-law. A case has been registered under provisions related to dowry death, and an investigation is underway.

In his complaint, Deepika’s father, Sanjay Nagar, alleged that he received a distress call from his daughter on Sunday afternoon during which she was crying and told him that her in-laws were assaulting her over dowry demands.

He alleged that the family demanded a Toyota Fortuner SUV and an additional Rs 45 lakh to Rs 50 lakh in cash as dowry.

Nagar said that around 7 pm, he and several relatives went to Deepika’s matrimonial home, where discussions were held with her in-laws in an attempt to resolve the dispute.

Around 12.30 am, he received a call from her in-laws informing him that Deepika had fallen from the roof and sustained injuries, asking the family to reach Sharda Hospital directly.

“When we reached the hospital, my daughter was already dead and there were several injury marks on her body,” he alleged.

Deepika’s aunt, Geeta Devi, alleged that she was pushed from the building and claimed that when she survived the fall, she was either stabbed or shot.

The family also alleged inconsistencies in the statements made by the in-laws, claiming that they initially said Deepika had fallen from the stairs before later stating that she had fallen from the roof. They alleged that she was murdered and her body was later thrown from the terrace.

Responding to allegations regarding the injuries found on Deepika’s body, police said the matter was under investigation and added that videography of the postmortem examination had been conducted as part of the probe.
