Comic Raunaq Rajani says Mumbai police kicked wife during protest, caused fracture

Comedian Raunaq Rajani has claimed that his wife suffered a fractured rib after police detained them during CJP's Mumbai protest. He shared videos of the incident and called for an investigation into the matter.

Comedian Raunaq Rajani has alleged that his wife suffered a fractured rib after a police officer kicked her during the July 22 protest in Mumbai. The demonstration was held in solidarity with the nationwide protests led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) demanding the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET paper leak and examination irregularities.

Rajani shared several videos on social media showing the moments leading up to the alleged assault and what transpired inside the police vehicle after he and his wife were detained. He alleged that the police officer assaulted his wife inside the vehicle after they were taken into custody.

He said the incident began after police detained a young protester, prompting him and his wife to question the officers while recording their actions.

"So it starts with this kid getting detained and both of us were telling the cops that they do not have the right to do so. Now, he's trying to get to me. While we are out here filming the cops doing this shameful illegal activity, keep an eye on the man in khaki uniform coming towards me. So this is how he got me down," he said.

According to him, he had asked his wife to hold his hand so she would not get hurt during the commotion. "So, at this point, I want to make sure my wife doesn't get hurt. So, I'm asking her to hold my hand. Now, as you saw in the other video, once we were on the floor, the man in khaki entered," he said.

Rajani then made his most serious allegation, claiming the officer kicked his wife. "And now, he kicks my wife and separates her hands. Watch it again, see his leg movement," he alleged, urging viewers to closely examine the footage.

He further claimed that another police officer, whom he identified as wearing a red shirt, forcefully pushed his wife into the police vehicle while they were being detained.

Rajani said that he and his wife were among those rounded up by the police during the protest on July 22. He alleged that officers shoved them into the police vehicle with brute force, leaving him with a neck sprain while his wife complained of severe pain in her ribs.

"Hi, my wife's rib has been fractured because of the protests in Mumbai. It was fractured by a policeman. On 22nd July 2026, my wife and I were detained by the police while they were illegally rounding up people at the Shivaji Park protest. You might have seen pictures of both of us in the cop van. They shoved us in with brute force. I ended up having a sprain on my neck. She ended up having pain in her ribs," he said.

Rajani said they initially did not realise the seriousness of the injury because they believed many others had suffered worse during the protests. However, after his wife's pain persisted, doctors advised an X-ray, which revealed a fractured rib.

"We didn't make a big deal out of it because, honestly, people have been through so much worse in terms of police brutality in the last week that we were like, fine, this is what it is. We went away to Delhi the next day. She came back. The pain was not reducing. So we went to a doctor who said she should get an X-ray, and she has a fracture. Now, I have video footage to show you what exactly happened," he said.

The videos show a police officer in khaki pinning Rajani to the ground before he was taken into the police vehicle. Rajani criticised what he described as police brutality against peaceful protesters and said he hopes the incident is thoroughly investigated.
