Thousands of government school teachers in Bihar are set to lose their jobs after the state's Education Department initiated action against 3,035 teachers accused of securing appointments using fake degrees and forged educational certificates.
The department has decided to terminate the services of the teachers following a detailed investigation conducted by the Vigilance Bureau into recruitment carried out between 2006 and 2015.
Officials said the findings revealed widespread irregularities involving fake educational institutions and forged academic documents used during recruitment.
A DECADE-LONG SCAM UNRAVELS
According to the department, the Vigilance Bureau has submitted a list of teachers facing action after completing its investigation. Based on the report, 1,830 FIRs have already been registered, naming all 3,035 teachers as accused.
The probe reportedly found that several appointment candidates had produced certificates issued by fake colleges, while many others had relied on forged educational qualifications to obtain government teaching jobs.
Officials said the action is part of a broader effort to clean up the state's recruitment system and ensure that only genuinely qualified teachers remain in classrooms.
SALARIES TO BE RECOVERED
The Education Department has also decided to recover the salaries and honorariums paid to the teachers during their period of service. The recovery will include interest, making the financial consequences of the action even more significant.
Officials said the recovery process will begin after the teachers' services are formally terminated.
SOME RESIGNED BEFORE ACTION
The investigation also found that some teachers had already resigned before disciplinary proceedings could begin, reportedly in an attempt to avoid departmental action.
However, officials indicated that resignations would not automatically shield individuals from legal proceedings if they were found to have obtained jobs through fraudulent means.
The crackdown marks one of the biggest actions taken by the Bihar Education Department against alleged fake appointments. Authorities said the exercise is aimed at strengthening transparency in teacher recruitment and restoring public confidence in the state's school education system after years of allegations surrounding irregular appointments.
