Fee is refunded if you're right: NTA clarifies answer key challenge process

NTA has clarified that candidates must pay Rs 200 upfront to challenge an answer key question. It said the fee is refunded for valid objections and any correction applies to all candidates.

In Short

  • Accepted objections lead subject experts to revise the provisional answer key
  • Candidates need not file duplicate challenges once an error is established
  • The fee is meant to deter unsupported or frivolous objections

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has clarified its Rs 200-per-question answer key challenge fee after concerns were raised that the process could be too expensive for candidates. The testing agency said the mechanism is designed to ensure fairness for all students and that a valid objection raised by even one candidate can benefit everyone who appeared for the examination.

In a post on X, NTA explained that when a candidate challenges a question and the objection is accepted by the subject experts, the corrected answer key is applied to all candidates who took the examination.

This means candidates do not have to individually challenge the same question to benefit from a correction. Once an objection is upheld, the revised answer is considered for the entire candidate pool.

Rs 200 FEE REFUNDED IF CHALLENGE IS UPHELD

NTA also clarified that the Rs 200 charged for each answer key challenge is refunded if the objection is found to be valid. The agency said the fee is intended to discourage frivolous objections and ensure that candidates raise challenges only when they have a genuine concern backed by evidence.

The clarification comes amid concerns among candidates over the financial burden of challenging multiple questions. At Rs 200 per question, a candidate challenging several answers would have to pay the fee upfront, although the amount relating to an accepted challenge is refunded.

The system is therefore designed so that the candidate who identifies a genuine error takes the initial step of challenging it, while the eventual correction benefits all candidates.

ONE VALID CHALLENGE CAN CHANGE THE FINAL ANSWER KEY

NTA's explanation also highlights the wider impact of the answer key challenge mechanism. If subject experts find an objection valid, the correction is not restricted to the candidate who raised it.

The revised answer is incorporated into the final answer key and applied uniformly to candidates. This can potentially affect the scores and rankings of a large number of students, depending on the question and examination.

For instance, if a candidate identifies an incorrect answer in the provisional key and the expert panel accepts the challenge, the corrected answer will be considered for all candidates who answered that question. The candidate who raised the objection is not required to be the only person who benefits from it.

The Rs 200 challenge mechanism is used across several NTA examinations. Recent 2026 examination processes, including UGC NET, have also provided candidates an opportunity to challenge provisional answer keys by paying the prescribed fee.

NTA has urged candidates who identify genuine errors to use the prescribed challenge process rather than refrain from raising an objection because of the fee. The agency's clarification effectively emphasises that a successful challenge is not an individual request for re-evaluation but a mechanism that can correct the answer key for the entire examination.

For candidates, the key takeaway is that the Rs 200 is paid upfront for filing an objection, but it is refunded when the challenge is upheld. More importantly, an accepted challenge can correct the official record for all candidates who appeared for the exam.
