Video: Odisha man caught after crashing stolen bike during escape

A suspected motorcycle thief was caught by residents after crashing a stolen bike while fleeing in Cuttack. The episode led to an FIR, police custody and an ongoing probe into the alleged theft.

A suspected motorcycle thief was caught by local residents after crashing a stolen bike into a roadside wall while attempting to flee in Odisha's Cuttack district, police said.

The incident took place under the jurisdiction of Madhupatna police station, where the accused allegedly stole a motorcycle from the Tinigharia Nuasahi area before trying to escape.

According to eyewitnesses, the man lost control of the stolen motorcycle while speeding away and rammed into a roadside wall. The impact threw him off the vehicle and onto the road.

Locals who witnessed the accident immediately rushed to the spot and overpowered the accused before he could flee.

THIEF WAS IN INEBRIATED STATE

Eyewitnesses also claimed that the man appeared to be in an inebriated state at the time of the incident, although police are yet to officially confirm whether he was under the influence of alcohol.

After catching the suspect, residents handed him over to personnel from the Madhupatna police station, who took him into custody for questioning.

The owner of the motorcycle later reached the police station after being informed about the incident and lodged a formal First Information Report (FIR) regarding the alleged theft.

POLICE LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION

Based on the complaint, police have registered a case and launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the sequence of events, verify the circumstances surrounding the theft and determine whether the accused was involved in any similar offences in the past.

Officials are also examining the recovered motorcycle and gathering evidence from the spot. Further legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.

The unusual sequence of events—where the alleged thief met with an accident while attempting to escape—drew the attention of local residents, who assisted police by detaining the accused until officers arrived at the scene. Authorities said the investigation is continuing.
