John Fetterman addresses Republican convention, deepening split with Democrats

Democratic Senator John Fetterman addressed a Republican midterm convention by video on Wednesday, widening his split with his own party and adding to Democratic worries that he could eventually switch sides. In the recorded message, the Pennsylvania senator introduced fellow Senator Dave McCormick, a Republican, and repeated lines that matched the themes Republicans are pushing at their two-day gathering in Dallas.

Fetterman spoke for just over a minute and did not criticise anyone by name, but he suggested Democrats had embraced extremes. His appearance is certain to deepen concerns among Democrats, who need to win four Republican-held Senate seats in November to regain the majority. If Fetterman were to join the Republican Party, they would need to gain one more seat to control the chamber.

Introducing McCormick, Fetterman called him “a great American”. He then said: “I’m always going to stand with America. I’m always going to reject the extremes and socialism and that anti-American way of life.” Standing in front of a steel mill, he added that he “will work with President Trump to fight and defend the steel way of life”.

The convention is aimed at energising the conservative base before the midterm elections, when the president’s party has historically lost seats. After Fetterman’s video ended, McCormick praised him from the stage, saying: “How great is John Fetterman? Thank you, Senator Fetterman, for your friendship. Thank you for your courage. And thank you for all you do for Pennsylvania.”

Fetterman has become increasingly isolated within the Democratic Party as he has maintained strong support for Israel’s war in Gaza and criticised left-wing candidates who are members of the Democratic Socialists of America. In the Senate, he has often broken with his party, voting with Republicans to end last year’s shutdown, supporting several of President Donald Trump’s nominees and opposing efforts to end the war in Iran.

He has repeatedly said he would not switch parties because of his support for labour unions, LGBTQ rights and other issues important to the left. Even if he stays in the Democratic Party, he could hold significant influence in the caucus if Democrats secure a narrow 51-49 majority, which would require them to remain united to exercise power.

Fetterman’s brief appearance at the Republican convention underlined his growing distance from Democrats, while his remarks and McCormick’s response kept the focus on his unusual role in a closely fought battle for Senate control. Soon after the video was played, a White House social media account shared it with the caption “Based John Fetterman”.
