The gunman who opened fire at the Secret Service checkpoint outside the White House has been identified as Nasire Best, a report by the New York Post said.
While the gunman's exact motive remains unclear, reports indicate he was mentally disturbed and frequently flagged by Secret Service officials for loitering near entry checkpoints. Investigators discovered the suspect believed he was the modern-day incarnation of Jesus Christ, suggesting the attack may have been driven by his mental instability.
Earlier, a court order was issued against Best to stay away from the White House premises. However, the 21-year-old reportedly violated the order.
On May 24 (as per the Indian Standard Time), the Secret Service officials spotted Best, who was appearing at 17th St. Northwest, while behaving strangely. He took out a gun and fired a few shots that hit at least one bystander, who suffered serious injuries.
However, the Secret Service officials quickly prevented the crazed gunman by returning a barrage of fire. Best was injured and was taken to the hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.
