A 23-year-old woman was allegedly killed by her distant relative in a machete attack at the KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal in Karntaka's Mangaluru district on Thursday evening.

The victim, Lavanya from Kakyapadavu, succumbed to her injuries after the attack. She worked at a private nursing home in Kalladka and was waiting for a bus when the accused allegedly pulled out a sharp weapon from his bag.

According to the preliminary investigation, Lavanya attempted to flee after the accused approached her. However, he allegedly attacked her with the weapon before escaping from the spot.

Police have identified the accused as Chetan, who is reportedly a distant relative of the deceased. Investigators suspect the attack was driven by one-sided love, alleging that the accused had been obsessively pursuing the victim.

Dakshina Kannada Superintendent of Police Arun Kumar said the incident took place at the KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Bantwal Town Police Station.

"About 20 minutes ago, an incident occurred at the KSRTC bus stand in Bantwal, which falls under the jurisdiction of Bantwal Town Police Station. A young woman, around 25 years of age, was waiting for a bus when a young man allegedly came and attacked her with a knife before fleeing the spot," Kumar said.

He added that people present at the scene immediately shifted the woman to the Government Hospital for treatment.

The SP said special police teams have been formed to quickly identify both the victim and the accused, and efforts are underway to expedite the investigation.

Police have registered a case and are continuing their investigation into the incident.
