An AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) councillor in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu, offered free tickets to Jailer 2 to people who took selfies during power cuts and shared the photographs with him. The initiative drew responses from residents, with 125 people eventually receiving tickets to watch the Rajinikanth-starrer at a theatre in the city.

The AIADMK's 9th Ward councillor came up with the initiative amid reports of increasing and unannounced power cuts across parts of Tamil Nadu. Through a WhatsApp group, he announced that residents who clicked and shared selfies from their homes during a power outage would receive free movie tickets.

The initiative received a response from several residents, who sent in their photographs. The councillor subsequently selected 55 people and one family member each, taking the total to 110. Another 15 AIADMK functionaries were included, bringing the total number of people who received tickets to 125.

The screening was organised to mark the AIADMK's 55th founding anniversary. The selected residents and party functionaries were taken to a theatre in the Angeripalayam area of Tiruppur to watch Jailer 2.

The initiative also offered a way to draw attention to the power cuts affecting residents. By asking people to document outages through selfies, the councillor sought to highlight the issue while offering movie tickets as an incentive. The move comes as Jailer 2, directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and starring Rajinikanth, continues its theatrical run.

The film also features Shiva Rajkumar, Mohanlal, Ramya Krishnan, Vidya Balan, SJ Suryah and Hrithik Roshan, among others.

Jailer 2 has been performing strongly at the box office. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film's worldwide gross stood at Rs 582.45 crore after its seventh day in theatres. It earned Rs 28.15 crore nett in India on Wednesday, October 21, marking a decline from the previous day's Rs 46.80 crore.
