A 26-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were found dead with gunshot wounds inside a house in Delhi's Burari area on Thursday afternoon, prompting a police investigation into what is suspected to be a case of murder followed by suicide.
The incident was reported from Kamalpur under the Burari police station limits after police received information about gunshots being heard inside a house. Police teams, along with the Crime Team, Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) officials and a CATS ambulance, rushed to the spot.
Upon forcing open the door of a room on the third floor of the building, officers found the bodies of Nikhil (26) and Shubhangi Kashyap (22) lying in a pool of blood. A pistol was also recovered from beside the man's body.
According to preliminary findings, investigators suspect that Nikhil first shot Shubhangi before turning the weapon on himself. However, police said the exact sequence of events and the cause of death would be confirmed only after the post-mortem examination and forensic analysis.
MESSAGE SENT TO FAMILY BEFORE INCIDENT
During the investigation, police also found that Nikhil had sent a message to his family shortly before the incident. Officials said the message referred to his mental state and appeared to indicate that he was contemplating taking an extreme step. The contents of the message are now being examined as part of the investigation.
According to police, the incident came to light when Nikhil's sister arrived at the house in the afternoon. After receiving no response despite repeated attempts to contact those inside, she entered the premises and found both victims lying motionless. She immediately alerted the police.
North Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Raja Banthia said preliminary investigation suggests that Nikhil and Shubhangi had been in contact for the past six to eight months. Police are also verifying whether the firearm used in the incident was licensed or illegally possessed.
The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, while forensic experts have collected evidence from the scene. Police said they are investigating all possible angles, including the nature of the relationship between the two and the circumstances leading up to the shooting.
