Seven people, including two women, have been arrested after police seized 308 grams of MDMA in two connected drug cases in Kerala's Thrissur district, officials said on Sunday. The operation began after officers recovered two grams of the synthetic drug concealed in the private parts of one of the women during a vehicle check, leading investigators to uncover a larger drug network. The total seizure is estimated to be worth over Rs 15 lakh.
The operation began on Friday night when personnel from the Peechi police station intercepted a car at a vehicle checking post in Vaniyampara. Finding the behaviour of the four occupants suspicious, police carried out a detailed search and allegedly recovered two grams of MDMA concealed in the private parts of one of the two women travelling in the vehicle.
The four arrested were identified as Shifaz, 26; Vidya, 28; Jishnu, 27; and Sreelakshmi, 20. During questioning, the accused allegedly told investigators they were returning from a party at a resort in the neighbouring Palakkad district. The District Anti-Narcotic Special Action Force was subsequently brought into the investigation.
Police said the probe revealed that Shifaz had procured the drugs. A search of his house under the Pavaratty police station limits led to the seizure of 13 grams of MDMA. Investigators later found that additional narcotics had allegedly been removed from the house by Shifaz's friend, Sumesh.
Acting on the leads, police tracked Sumesh and identified two of his associates, Shabeer P A, 37, of Thaikkad, and Ansad, 33, of Chavakkad. Chavakkad police arrested the duo and recovered 288.8 grams of MDMA from an aluminium fabrication shop at Thaikkad on Saturday. Sumesh, 25, was later arrested in connection with the case.
In all, police seized 308 grams of MDMA in the two linked cases registered at the Peechi and Chavakkad police stations. All seven accused were produced before a court on Sunday and remanded to judicial custody.
