In Short

  • Nikhil found a flat in Bengaluru but was asked to vacate as he is a bachelor
  • He had a valid rent agreement and deposit paid with the owner
  • The society president enforced a no-bachelor policy strictly

“I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end, it doesn’t even matter," Linkin Park probably wasn’t talking about Bengaluru’s rental market, but one bachelor resident’s flat-hunting saga fit the lyrics rather perfectly and his X post about a sudden eviction despite having the flat's keys has gone viral.

It all started when Nikhil Sheoran finally found a flat and posted a picture of it on September 25 with the hopeful caption, “War is over?” Little did he know that his quest for the perfect flat in Bengaluru is never over.

Nikhil later shared the post explaining how he was asked to vacate the flat despite having a proper agreement with the owner, simply because he was a bachelor. He also shared a screenshot of his WhatsApp conversation with the ‘president’ of the society.

“Bangalore landlords so hostile, if they find out you’re a bachelor they will take you back and shoot you in the head,” read his rather sassy caption.

The society representative began the conversation by introducing themselves: “I am current president.”

They then got straight to the point: “Speak to your owner and look for another flat please.”

Nikhil, understandably, tried to make his case. He pointed out that he had already paid the deposit, had a rent agreement and had discussed the arrangement with the owner.

But the president appeared to have little room for negotiation.

“Yes, we have communicated the association decision that no bachelors allowed. Please work with your owner to vacate at the earliest,” they responded.

And just like that, Nikhil’s “War is over?” moment came crashing down.

With over 480,000 views, Nikhil’s post has gone viral. People crammed all their thoughts into the comments section. Many commented on how bad the situation of renting a flat is in any metro city as a single person.

The comments also turned into a collective venting session about the many hurdles single tenants can face, from finding landlords willing to rent to them to navigating housing society rules after they have already found a home.

For Nikhil, the irony was hard to miss. He had found the flat, sorted the paperwork and thought the exhausting search was finally over. Then came the society president, one WhatsApp message and a rather inconvenient reminder that in Bengaluru’s rental market, the end of the hunt may not always be the end.

So, was the war really over?

Well, Nikhil’s September 25 post had the answer a little too early. In the end, it didn’t even matter.
