A woman in Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh allegedly shot dead her live-in partner after what police described as years of physical abuse, sexual assault and extortion.

The case came to light on the morning of April 29, when the body of Anuj Kumar was found lying in a forested area near Julahapur village with bullet wounds. His family immediately lodged a murder complaint, prompting police to form three investigative teams to crack the case.

As the probe intensified, suspicion soon fell on Shobha Rani, the woman who had been living with the deceased in a live-in relationship. When she was questioned, police said she eventually broke down and revealed the sequence of events leading up to the murder.

WHY SHOBHA RANI KILLED ANUJ KUMAR

According to SP (Rural) Prakash Kumar, Shobha told police she had been married to a man named Satyendra since 2011 and has a daughter from the marriage. After separating from her husband in 2023, she met Anuj Kumar in 2024 and the two began living together.

Shobha alleged that Anuj soon began abusing her physically and sexually. She further alleged that he recorded objectionable videos of her and threatened to make them public to coerce her into sexual acts. He allegedly demanded money regularly and beat her when she refused.

She also alleged that he harboured ill intentions toward her 10-year-old daughter and had attempted to molest her younger sister, an act that had previously landed him in jail.

THE FINAL TRIGGER

Matters reached a boiling point on the night of April 28.

According to Kumar, Anuj took Shobha to a caf and later to the village, where he assaulted and raped her. Initially, she thought of killing herself. However, fearing for her daughter's safety, she decided to seize Anuj's country-made pistol and kill him.

Police recovered the weapon following Shobha’s arrest. She was produced before a court and subsequently sent to jail.
