NMC seat matrix out: 9,911 more MBBS seats for 2026-27; Karnataka, TN lead
The expansion includes 2,111 seats through increased intake in existing colleges and 7,800 seats from newly approved colleges. According to the NMC, 25 new medical colleges have been approved this year - seven government colleges (400 seats) and 18 private colleges (2,000 seats).

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 9,911 additional MBBS seats for the 2026-27 academic session, taking the total number of undergraduate medical seats (excluding Institutes of National Importance) to 1,36,939 across 823 medical colleges in the country.
The latest seat matrix includes approvals for new medical colleges as well as increased intake in existing institutions and will be used for the upcoming admission process.
MBBS SEAT MATRIX 2026: STATE-WISE NUMBERS
Among the states, Karnataka has recorded the highest increase with 1,300 new MBBS seats, followed by Tamil Nadu (950), Rajasthan (900), West Bengal (825), Telangana (810) and Uttar Pradesh (800). Bihar added 740 seats, while Madhya Pradesh (420), Maharashtra (400), Andhra Pradesh (375) and Jharkhand (370) also saw significant growth. The NMC said the seat matrix remains subject to revision based on decisions of the appeal committee or any other competent authority. It has directed medical colleges to admit students only against the approved intake capacity, warning that admissions beyond the sanctioned strength would invite regulatory action under the National Medical Commission Act, 2019.

The latest approvals continue the Centre's drive to expand undergraduate medical education by allowing new medical colleges and increasing the intake of existing ones. The NMC has also asked counselling authorities to strictly follow the approved seat matrix while conducting admissions for the 2026-27 academic session.
