A B.Sc. Nursing student who was allegedly running a private hospital in Uttar Pradesh's Chandauli was arrested after he operated on a woman in the absence of a doctor, following which she died, police said.
The incident took place at Indra Hospital in Mahraiya village under Dhanapur police station. The hospital's registration has now been cancelled, while the health department has recommended that the facility be sealed following an investigation by the Chief Medical Officer (CMO), officials said.
WOMAN DIES AFTER OPERATION
According to police, Suman, a resident of Lakhaiypur village under Dheena police station, was admitted to the hospital on August 18 for a uterus-related operation.
The hospital manager, identified as 24-year-old Indrajeet Prajapati, allegedly arranged for doctors to visit the facility on call for treatment and surgeries. However, no doctor arrived on the day Suman was scheduled to undergo surgery.
Police said Prajapati then allegedly performed the operation himself on August 19.
Suman's condition deteriorated after the procedure and she died later that night.
Her family subsequently approached the Dhanapur police and lodged a complaint, following which the police sought an investigation by the CMO.
The medical inquiry found Prajapati responsible for the alleged medical negligence, following which a case was registered and he was arrested on charges of culpable homicide.
'WRONG VEIN CUT, KIDNEY DAMAGED'
According to a police press note, a case was registered at Dhanapur police station on the complaint of Chandravali Bind, Suman's father, under Section 105 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The police said the CMO's investigation found that during the operation, a wrong blood vessel was cut and Suman's kidney was damaged, resulting in her death later that night.
The investigation also found that no doctor or paramedical staff was present at the hospital and that Prajapati was admitting and treating patients himself.
NURSING STUDENT, NO MEDICAL DEGREE
The CMO's inquiry found that Prajapati was a BSc Nursing student and did not possess any degree or diploma qualifying him to practise medicine, police said.
Prajapati, originally from Raipur Babhniav village in Dhanapur, had been operating the private facility in Mahraiya village under the name Indra Hospital. Locals reportedly knew him as a doctor, while he would generally call doctors to the hospital on demand for treating patients.
However, the investigation found that the hospital was being operated without a doctor or paramedical staff and that Prajapati himself was treating patients.
During questioning, Prajapati allegedly admitted that he was the hospital manager and normally called doctors to treat patients. He told police that when no doctor arrived on the day of the incident, he performed the operation himself, following which the woman died.
Based on the CMO's report and the family's complaint, police arrested Prajapati and sent him to jail. Further investigation is underway.
The health department has also cancelled the registration of Indra Hospital and recommended that the facility be sealed.
