Dutch princesses in foiled murder plot, suspect found with axes, Nazi symbols

Authorities in the Netherlands foiled an attack targeting two members of the Dutch royal family — Princess Catharina-Amalia, 22, and her younger sister, Princess Alexia, 20 — who were allegedly targeted by a 33-year-old man suspected of far-right extremist views and accused of plotting a sinister Nazi-inspired attack to kill the future Queen and her sister.

The suspect, who is due to appear in court on Monday, was arrested in The Hague in February. Authorities said he was found with two axes engraved with the words “Alexia,” “Mossad,” and “Sieg Heil,” a Nazi-era salute. He was also carrying a handwritten note bearing the names “Amalia,” “Alexia,” and the word “bloodbath.”

AUTHORITIES HAVE NOT REVEALED MOTIVE

The Hague Public Prosecutor’s Office did not disclose further details, including the suspect’s identity, citing Dutch privacy laws. Authorities have also not revealed a motive behind the alleged plot or the disturbing writings.

Details of the February arrest emerged as the royal family — including Amalia and Alexia — marked King’s Day with public appearances in the heavily secured city of Dokkum on April 27.

Amalia, the daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima, is the heir to the Dutch throne, while Alexia is second in line.

FUTURE DUTCH QUEEN HAS BEEN TARGET OF MULTIPLE THREATS

She has previously been the target of multiple serious threats, including an alleged gang plot by drug cartels to kidnap her along with then Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, who currently serves as Secretary-General of Nato.

In 2020, she was forced to go into hiding after a man sent messages threatening her with rape and violence. In 2022, authorities intercepted communications between gang members targeting Amalia and Rutte. That same year, she was compelled to leave her student accommodation in Amsterdam over security concerns, and Queen Maxima moved her to the heavily guarded royal palace in The Hague.

Queen Maxima described the impact on her daughter, saying, “She can't live in Amsterdam and she can't really go outside the palace.” “It has enormous consequences for her life,” she added, noting that her daughter could no longer live in Amsterdam or move freely outside the palace.

Speaking about the impact of prolonged security restrictions, Princess Catharina-Amalia, who holds the title Princess of Orange, earlier said she longs for everyday experiences she has been forced to give up: “I miss normal life, the life of a student — walking the streets, going to a store.”
