A case has been registered against the husband of a DMK functionary and two others for allegedly threatening and intimidating TVK MLA A Karthik after he intervened to stop suspected illegal sand mining activity in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar district.
The incident was reported near Mamsapuram in the Srivilliputhur constituency held by Karthik as its MLA, where local residents had repeatedly raised concerns over alleged sand extraction taking place during night hours.
Acting on complaints from the public, MLA Karthik visited the location to assess the situation and verify the allegations.
According to the complaint, the MLA reached the site while sand mining activity was allegedly underway and attempted to halt the operation.
During the intervention, Thangamangani — identified as the husband of Mamsapuram Town Panchayat President Sujitha Mary, who is also associated with the DMK, allegedly arrived at the spot along with two others.
Police said the group allegedly confronted the MLA, leading to a heated exchange. The complaint further alleged that the accused obstructed the legislator while he was carrying out his public duties, used abusive language, and issued threats during the confrontation. The altercation was reportedly captured on video.
Based on Karthik’s complaint, police registered a case against the three individuals and launched an inquiry into the allegations.
Authorities are expected to examine video evidence and record statements as part of the investigation.
The episode has renewed attention on allegations of illegal sand mining in the region, with residents expressing concern over the influence of those involved and questioning the challenges faced in curbing such activities.
Police said further investigation is underway and additional action will depend on the findings.
