2 men on bike run over by speeding LPG truck while overtaking in Kanpur

A speeding truck loaded with LPG cylinders hit a motorcycle in Kanpur, killing two men on the spot. Police later detained the truck driver as investigators examine the circumstances leading to the accident.

Two friends riding a motorcycle were killed after a speeding truck loaded with LPG cylinders ran them over in Kanpur, police said on Saturday. The driver fled after the crash but was later intercepted by police and detained.

The victims were identified as Sachin Valmiki, 25, and his friend Suraj, 35, both residents of Maswanpur-Rawatpur. Police said the two were on their way to Panki around 8 pm on Friday when the truck, carrying Indane LPG cylinders, hit their motorcycle while overtaking them.

Eyewitnesses told police that both men fell on the road and came under the truck's wheels. They were taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared them dead,

Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kalyanpur) Dileep Kumar Singh said. "The truck driver fled after the accident but was intercepted by police near the Panki canal following information from local residents. The truck was seized and the driver detained," he said.

Police said the victims were identified with the help of the motorcycle and vehicle registration details, and their families were informed. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.

Sachin, the youngest in his family, worked for a private company and had got married three months ago, his brother Nitin said. He had left home with Suraj on Friday evening, telling his family that they were going to Panki.

The families later submitted a written complaint to Kalyanpur police against the truck driver. SHO Keshav Kumar Tiwari said a case has been registered on the basis of the complaint and further investigation is underway.

Police are also probing the circumstances of the accident, including the truck's speed and how the motorcycle came under its wheels during the overtaking.
