Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee lashed out at West Bengal's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as he shared on social media a CCTV video showing a man allegedly indulging in vandalism outside his family's residence. He said the person seen in the footage smashed a window pane on the first floor of the building by throwing a large stone.
Banerjee said the incident, which he claimed took place early Tuesday, reflected the normalisation of violence in Bengal. The CCTV video shows a motorcycle-borne man arriving at the gate of the residential building.
He stops the motorbike before picking up a stone and throwing it upward. The unidentified man, who was wearing a helmet, can be seen repeating the act a second time. The scene unfolded right next to a Kolkata Police kiosk, which appeared to be abandoned.
India Today Digital could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.
Sharing it on X, Banerjee said the incident did not "merely" reflect a collapse of law and order, but also the "complete normalization of violence under BJP's goonda raj."
"Where was the police? Under whose instructions did this miscreant carry out such a brazen attack and walk away with complete impunity?" he wrote in the social media post.
Banerjee added, "This is the terrifying reality of Bengal today: A regime that has normalised violence, empowered hooligans and created an atmosphere where those indulging in criminal acts operate with absolute confidence because they believe the State will protect them."
He also took a swipe at the West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti-Social Activities Bill, 2026, which proposes preventive detention for up to 12 months without trial and expands the definition of anti-social activity to include a wide range of offences.
"Will the newly passed West Bengal Public Safety and Control of Anti Social Activities Bill, 2026 be applied to BJP backed criminals as well?" Banerjee wrote in his post.
This came a little over a month after the TMC leader, who is the nephew of former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, was attacked during his visit to Sonarpur near Kolkata, where he had gone to meet the families of alleged victims of post-poll violence.
Scores of people threw stones and eggs at him and raised chants of "chor, chor" as he escaped the mob wearing a police-issued cricket helmet and with help from his aides.
