Assam flood crisis deepens, 21 killed in 24 hours; over 5.6 lakh affected

New Delhi: The flood situation in Assam worsened significantly on Tuesday, with 21 people losing their lives in the last 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 31.

According to Assam State Disaster Management Authority, more than 5.64 lakh people were affected across 16 districts. 872 villages submerged, over 24,000 hectares of crop area damaged.

Brahmaputra and several other rivers flow above danger mark.

The NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army and state authorities have launched rescue and relief operations, distributing food and other essentials.

India Meteorological Department has predicted more rainfall, with a possibility of increase in flood situation.
