IMD: Kalabaisakhi-triggered rain, thunderstorms to lash Odisha till June 20

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorm and lightning activity across Odisha for the next five days, with a state-wide ‘Yellow Warning’ for Kalabaisakhi (nor’wester) till June 20.

For today, an ‘Orange Warning’ has been issued for 20 districts and a ‘Yellow Warning’ for the remaining 10 districts for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds. Wind speeds are likely to reach 50-60 kmph.

From tomorrow till June 20, a ‘Yellow Warning’ for thunderstorms will remain in effect for the entire state.

The Southwest Monsoon is currently active over Odisha and has advanced into some more parts of the state today. The IMD said the monsoon is likely to cover the whole of Odisha in the next 4-5 days.

Conditions are also favorable for the monsoon’s advance into more parts of Telangana, Jharkhand, Bihar and Chhattisgarh.

As per the warning issued, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Nuapada, Balangir, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Bargarh, Jharsuguda, Deogarh, and Sundargarh districts of Odisha may see lightning with gusty winds of 40-50 kmph.

As per the issued orange warning, the remaining 20 districts may experience lightning with gusty winds of 50-60 kmph and rain.

Meanwhile, coastal districts are expected to face hot and humid conditions over the next five days. A ‘Yellow Warning’ has been issued today for 14 coastal districts for hot and humid weather.

Heatwave ‘Yellow Warning’ is also in place for Jharsuguda and Sambalpur.

For tomorrow, a ‘Yellow Warning’ has been issued for all 30 districts for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 40-50 kmph.
