New-Delhi: A Himalayan avalanche killed at least 15 expedition workers, as rescuers continued efforts to recover bodies from a mountain camp in central Nepal.

The avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal, a 7,126-metre-high mountain in Manang district, before foreign climbers had arrived at the site. A huge mass of ice reportedly broke loose and swept through the camp, burying 16 Nepali support staff under the snow and ice.

Rescue teams have so far recovered the bodies of 15 people. The bodies have been transported by helicopter to Kathmandu.

One worker from Okhaldhunga district remains missing. Rescue operations have been severely hampered by adverse weather conditions and heavy snowfall in the region.

The incident has raised fresh concerns over the increasing avalanche risk in Nepal’s high-altitude mountain regions. Rapid changes in weather, combined with heavy snowfall, have made climbing and rescue operations particularly hazardous.

The Himlung Himal tragedy is being reported as the biggest accident of Nepal’s ongoing mountaineering season, underscoring the dangers faced by both climbers and the local support workers who assist expeditions in some of the country’s most challenging terrain.
