Most-wanted thief injured in police encounter while trying to flee in Keonjhar

Keonjhar: The most-wanted thief Mohammad Nafis has been shot and injured in the Patla forest near Champua in Keonjhar district after he opened fire on the police.

As to reports, Nafis was arrested on Sunday from Majhigaon in Jharkhand. Following his arrest, police took him to the Patla forest early Monday morning to recover stolen goods that he had allegedly hidden there.

According to police, while showing the location of the hidden items, Nafis suddenly took out a firearm he had concealed earlier in the forest, opened fire at the police team, and attempted to escape. In response, the police fired in self-defence, injuring Nafis. He sustained a bullet injury to his right leg and was seriously hurt. He was immediately rushed to Champua Hospital for treatment. Later, he was shifted to Keonjhar Government Medical College and Hospital, where doctors said his condition is now stable.

Notably, Nafis was wanted in several cases of daylight house-breaking and theft in the Champua police station area, where he allegedly targeted houses when residents were away by breaking open doors.

Nafis used to target thefts in Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj before fleeing back to Jharkhand. Police said more than 30 criminal cases have been registered against him.
