Puri: The divine sojourn comes to an end today as Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra begin their return journey to Shreemandira in the famous Bahuda Yatra.

After spending 8 days at Gundicha Temple, considered to be the birthplace and aunt’s home of the Trinity, the Chaturdhamurti will proceed back to their eternal abode in three mammoth chariots.

Lord Jagannath will ride Nandighosha Lord Balabhadra, also called Bada Thakura, will be seated on Taladhwaja, Devi Subhadra will travel in Darpadalana, also known as Devadalana

All arrangements have been put in place by the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration and the Puri district administration for the smooth and peaceful conduct of Bahuda Yatra.

Elaborate security, crowd management and ritual protocols are in place to ensure devotees can witness the return journey safely.

Bahuda Yatra marks the conclusion of the Rath Yatra festival. The pulling of the chariots back to the 12th-century Shreemandira is expected to draw lakhs of people to the Grand Road.

  1. The three Chariots, the grand road of Puri are ready for Bahuda Yatra amid presence of lakhs of devotees on Bada Danda in Puri.
  2. Devotees Fill Bada Danda with Sankirtan for Lord JagannathDevotees gathered on the Bada Danda were seen immersed in Sankirtan for Lord Jagannath, creating a deeply devotional atmosphere. Chanting the Mahamantra in unison — “Hare Krushna Hare Krushna, Krushna Krushna Hare Hare, Hare Ram Hare Ram, Ram Hare” — they moved along the Grand Road to the rhythmic beats of mridang and the clanging of gini and cymbals. The devotional music and collective chanting turned the entire stretch into a sea of faith and devotion, as pilgrims and locals joined in, offering prayers to the Trinity during the ongoing festivities.

Odissi Dance by Girls Devoted to Lord Jagannath in Front of the Three ChariotsIn a beautiful display of faith and culture, a group of young girls are seen performing Odissi dance in front of the three majestic chariots on the Bada Danda, offering their devotion to Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra. Dressed in traditional Odissi attire and moving to classical Odissi rhythms, the dancers are seen paying tribute to the Trinity through graceful mudras and expressions, adding a divine charm to the festive atmosphere.

Green Corridor Created on Bada Danda for Emergency Vehicles during Bahuda YatraKeeping in view the massive congregation of devotees and the possibility of medical emergencies due to rain, heat or humidity, a green corridor has been created amid the dense crowd on the Bada Danda in Puri. Volunteers have formed a human chain to maintain a clear, motorable passage for ambulances and fire engines. The corridor starts from near the barricade in front of the three chariots at Nakachana Dwara of Gundicha Temple and continues till the point where the crowd extends. The objective is to ensure that emergency service vehicles can reach patients quickly and transport them to the nearest temporary or permanent medical facility for immediate attention.

Nabagunjara Besha and Arjuna Witnessed During Bahuda Yatra in PuriAdding a unique spiritual touch to the Bahuda Yatra, two women devotees were seen taking up divine beshas related to Lord Jagannath on the Bada Danda. One devotee appeared in Nabagunjara Besha, while the other took the form of Arjuna from the Mahabharata. According to legend, Lord Krishna once appeared before Arjuna in the form of Nabagunjara — a mystical composite form made of 9 animals, including an elephant, snake, tiger, deer, and others. Nabagunjara is considered an avatar of Lord Narayan, and by extension, of Lord Jagannath. Speaking to Kalinga TV, the devotee in Nabagunjara Besha said she chose the form to convey something unique. “Through this besha, the Lord wants to convey that divinity resides in all living beings, including animals,” she said. The rare depiction drew the attention of devotees gathered for Bahuda Yatra, who stopped to witness the blend of mythology, devotion, and art.
  1. Today these Rituals of the deities have been executed – ‘Tadapa laagi’ finished at 8.40 am. ‘Abakasha Puja’ took place between 8.45 and 9am.

Devotee as Lord Hanuman Mesmerizes Crowd on Bada DandaAdding divine fervor to the festivities, a devotee dressed as Lord Hanuman was seen performing near the chariots inside the barricade on Bada Danda, Puri. Clad in traditional attire, he danced and moved with monkey-like grace, captivating onlookers with his devotion and energy. Holding a gada/mace in his hand, he also displayed impressive skills by tossing it into the air and catching it, drawing cheers from the crowd gathered around. Devotees paused to witness the unique act, calling it a beautiful expression of bhakti during the Yatra.

  2. Pahandi of Chakraraj Sudarshan BeginsThe sacred Pahandi of Chakraraj Sudarshan has commenced. Carried on the shoulders of servitors to the rhythmic beats of gongs by ghantuas, Lord Sudarshan is being taken in a ceremonial procession. The atmosphere is filled with devotion as Alata and Chamara are waved, while some devotees joyfully play with Chakra Banatis. Lord Sudarshan will be seated on the Devadalana chariot of Devi Subhadra as part of the Bahuda Yatra rituals.
  3. Pahandi of Lor Balabhadra, the Bada Thakura begins amid sound of ghanta, Haribol, Hulahuli while the devotees are mesmerized with the beautiful sight of the pahandi and soaked in devotion.
