New Delhi: For the first time, the Central Government has officially released the names of six soldiers martyred in Operation Sindoor. The names have been formally made public and inscribed on the Roll of Honour at the National War Memorial in New Delhi.

The six brave martyrs are Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, Rifleman Sunil Kumar, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar, Agniveer M. Murali Naik, Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh, and Sergeant Surendra Kumar.

While there had been widespread speculation earlier about casualties during the Indian Army’s Operation Sindoor in May 2025, the government has now officially acknowledged the deaths following the inscription of their names at the War Memorial.

For exceptional bravery during the operation, Rifleman Sunil Kumar has been posthumously awarded the ‘Vir Chakra’, India’s third-highest military decoration, while Sergeant Surendra Kumar has been honoured with the ‘Vayu Sena Medal’.

Operation Sindoor was launched by the Indian Army in response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam. The operation targeted and destroyed terrorist camps across the Pakistan border. The four-day conflict had sparked discussions about Army casualties, which the government has now officially confirmed.

Background:

Operation Sindoor began on the morning of May 7, 2025, two weeks after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed the lives of 26 innocent civilians. India launched the operation to avenge the attack.
