23 dead as Japan quake rescue continues

The number of people killed in the massive earthquake that hit Japan’s Kumamoto region has now reached 23 after rescue teams searched houses to free people trapped in the rubble of toppled buildings.

The authorities confirmed 60 injuries from this major earthquake, but many thousands have been relocated from damaged homes.

The severe impact was seen when buildings toppled down the roads, and infrastructure was ravaged while both water and power outages continued into the prolonged aftermath.

Some 23,000 homes lost electricity supplies. A number of thousands are in temporary shelters.

Aftershocks continue, and high temperatures are impeding search efforts and making it increasingly hard for rescue crews to find survivors, the authorities have warned.

A total of several thousand emergency rescuers have been in the field, with officials referring to the operations as a race against time.

Japanese residents continue to be warned about aftershocks and potential landslides in the affected area as relief efforts carry on.
