Depression formed over BoB, Heavy rainfall to lash Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to witness heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours as a depression has been formed over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of North Odisha- West Bengal coasts, informed the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

As per IMD bulletin, the well marked low pressure area over northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas of North Odisha-West Bengal coasts has concentrated into a Depression and lay centred at 8.30 am of July 26 about 130 km south-southeast of Sagar Island (West Bengal), 140 km southeast of Digha (West Bengal), 170 km east of Chandbali and 180 km east-southeast of Balasore.

It is very likely to move northwestwards, intensify further into a deep depression during next 24 hrs and cross north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island around forenoon/noon of July 27.

IMD issued a red warning for heavy rainfall in six districts for today, likely Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack and Keonjhar.

An orange alert was issued for Balasore, Sundargarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Mayurbhanj, Boudh, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh districts.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert remains in force for Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Sonepur, Bolangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal and Ganjam districts.

The IMD has also forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kmph at isolated places over Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Subarnapur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Puri, Khurda and Nayagarh districts.

The weather office has advised people in the affected districts to remain alert, as intense rainfall may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas, reduced visibility and disruptions to road traffic.
