New Delhi: The Centre has extended the term of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh by one year. He will now continue to hold office till October 31, 2027 or further order, whichever is earlier.

The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), said an official order issued on Saturday.

Singh tenure was due to conclude on 31 October 2026.

According to the order, the extension was granted by relaxing the provisions of Fundamental Rule 56(d) and Rule 16(1A) of the All India Services (Death-cum-Retirement Benefits) Rules, 1958.

Singh, a 1989 batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, has taken over as the Defence Secretary from November 1, 2024 following the superannuation of Giridhar Aramane.

His appointment was preceded by his position as Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

His mandate comes amid ongoing efforts by the Defence Ministry to push through much-needed reforms, such as the rapid growth of indigenous defence production, more transparent procurement, and military modernisation.

This guarantees an additional year of administrative stability in the ministry.
