TET Deadline Extended to 3 Years in Compliance With SC Order, Bringing Major Relief to Odisha Teachers

Bhubaneswar: Bringing relief to thousands of in-service teachers in Odisha who are yet to qualify the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET), the state School & Mass Education Department has extended the deadline to clear TET by one year, in line with a Supreme Court order.
In a letter to the Director, Elementary Education, Additional Secretary Jadumani Mahala said the Supreme Court has modified its earlier judgment and extended the period for acquiring TET qualification from 2 years to 3 years for in-service teachers.
What changes for Odisha teachers:
Extended Timeline: In-service teachers in Odisha who have not passed TET must now clear it by August 31, 2028. The earlier deadline was August 31, 2027.

SC Direction: The order follows the Supreme Court’s May 29, 2026 ruling in the Review Petition arising out of State of U.P. vs. Anjuman Ishaat-E-Taleem Trust & Others. The Court made TET qualification mandatory for all teachers.
State Compliance: The S&ME Department has asked the Director, Elementary Education to circulate the order to all authorities and stakeholders in Odisha and ensure “meticulous compliance” with the SC judgment dated September 1, 2025, as modified on May 29, 2026.
The department has directed that the matter be accorded top priority and necessary steps be taken for timely compliance with the Court’s directions.
