Bhubaneswar: The Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS) organised a Parents-Representatives Conference on Saturday, bringing together over 500 representatives of parents and tribal leaders from different districts of Odisha.

KISS conducts such conferences every three months to facilitate interaction with representatives of the parents of its 40,000 students.

During the conference, the parents’ representatives expressed satisfaction over the recent improvements and renovations undertaken at KISS. They appreciated the initiatives taken by KIIT and KISS Founder Dr Achyuta Samanta to further improve the educational and residential facilities available to students.

The representatives particularly welcomed the improvements in education, accommodation, food, clothing, footwear, sports, skill development and vocational training facilities.

Among the major improvements highlighted during the conference were the provision of individual beds for all students and the introduction of dining tables in the dining areas.

The parents’ representatives said that Dr Samanta has been continuously working to ensure better facilities and opportunities for tribal children studying at KISS.

They also highlighted the contribution of KISS alumni, stating that around 40,000 students who have passed out of the institution have established themselves in various professional fields.

According to the representatives, these former students have brought recognition to their respective tribal communities while contributing towards the financial empowerment of their own families and other families.

Representatives of the KISS Tribal Parents’ Association, KISS Alumni Association and KISS Students’ Association also participated in the programme.

During the conference, the representatives spoke about Dr Samanta’s contribution to tribal education and development over the past 35 years.

They described his efforts as a guiding force for tribal communities and acknowledged his long-standing commitment to providing educational opportunities to underprivileged children.

They further stated that KISS represents their past, present and future.

Describing the importance of the two institutions in their lives, the representatives said, “KISS is our soul, while KIIT is our source of livelihood.”

The representatives also expressed displeasure over criticism directed at KIIT, KISS and their founder, Dr Achyuta Samanta, by certain individuals.

They said such criticism was painful to them, considering the contributions made by the institutions towards tribal education, welfare and empowerment.
