Mumbai: A special court in Maharashtra has acquitted all accused in the 2005 murder case of Congress leader Pawanraje Nimbalkar in what turned out to be one of the longest political trials of the state.
Nimbalkar was murdered in July 2005 in Osmanabad district, and the case acquired notoriety with allegations of conspiracy by some politically prominent personalities.
The Special Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA) Court of Kolhapur examined 128 witnesses, including eye-witnesses in this case.
It stated in the verdict: “We feel that the prosecution has not produced any reliable witnesses for establishing the conspiracy between the accused.”

Later, it added that even after examination of so many witnesses and documents, “we are of the view that the prosecution failed to prove their case against the accused beyond a reasonable doubt and to their expectation.”
The acquittal also means freedom for former minister Padmasinh Patil, who was among the key accused charged with allegedly masterminding the murder conspiracy.
Eventually, it transformed into one of the most talked-about and longest political trials in the country.
