Flood-like Situation in Athagarh Leaves Villages Stranded After Roads Submerge

Continuous heavy rainfall has triggered a flood-like situation in parts of Odisha’s Cuttack district, leaving several villages in Athagarh subdivision cut off after key roads and bridges went under water, disrupting normal life and transport. The worsening conditions come amid an active monsoon spell that has prompted authorities to remain on alert across the state.

The worst impact has been reported from Athagarh, where rising water levels have submerged road stretches linking a number of villages, isolating residents from nearby towns. Overflowing rivers and streams have inundated low-lying areas, making movement difficult for both commuters and emergency services.

Road connectivity has been severely affected after floodwaters flowed over several approach roads and low-level crossings. Residents in the affected villages have been forced to remain indoors as access to markets, schools and essential services has been interrupted.

Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised people living in vulnerable and low-lying areas to avoid venturing into flooded stretches. Officials are also keeping watch on river levels and are prepared to respond if water levels continue to rise.

The flood-like conditions follow days of incessant rainfall under the influence of a well-marked low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha and warned of localised flooding, waterlogging, disruption of road traffic and damage to vulnerable infrastructure.

The state government has already directed district administrations to remain on high alert, with disaster management agencies coordinating preparedness measures in vulnerable regions. Emergency teams have been asked to stay ready for rescue and relief operations should the situation deteriorate further.

Authorities have appealed to residents to follow official advisories, stay away from inundated roads and bridges, and avoid unnecessary travel until water levels recede. Continuous monitoring of rainfall and river conditions is underway as the state braces for further spells of heavy rain.
