Phulbani Govt Medical College to be named after Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to name the ‘Government Medical College and Hospital, Phulbani’ in Kandhamal after revered tribal leader and saint Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati.

Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said the move is aimed at preserving the lasting memory of Swamiji and to honour his service and sacrifice for the tribal people of Kandhamal.

Along with the renaming, the CM has also sanctioned ₹13 crore from CMSA funds for the development of Swamiji’s ashram, ashram school and Kanyashram at Jalespata.

“The funds have been allocated to preserve the heritage of Swamiji’s ashram and to keep his legacy alive,” a note from the the Chief Minister’s office read.

As part of the package:₹5 crore will be spent to set up a 300-seat girls’ hostel. ₹3 crore has been earmarked for conservation of Swamiji’s heritage site.₹60 lakh will be used for a mega river lift project to ensure water supply to the Jalespata Ashram, Ashram School and Kanyashram girls’ hostel.

The allocation will also cover construction of toilets, additional hostel buildings, boundary walls, classrooms and renovation of existing hostel buildings.

Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati was a prominent social worker in Kandhamal who worked extensively for education and welfare of tribals.
