Dhenkanal: At least 44 workers from different villages of Kankadahada block in Dhenkanal district of Odisha have fallen victim to fraud after opening bank accounts on the promise of jobs.
As per the claim, their accounts were later used for transactions worth crores from within and outside the state.
According to information, a man named Debasis Das promised the workers jobs in a company in Cuttack district. In 2023, workers from villages including Balikuma, Palasatangi, Jerosahi, Tarinipashi and Dhuligoth were asked to open accounts in a bank in Dhenkanal town after depositing Rs 1,500 each.
After the accounts were opened, Debasis allegedly took away their bank passbooks on some pretext.
Three years after opening the accounts, the workers started receiving notices. They were shocked to find that crores of rupees had been transacted through their accounts.
