Bhubaneswar: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Odisha government, alleging that it has failed on multiple fronts and that there is “no one to listen to the people.”

Speaking during the BJD’s ‘Jana Samparka Padayatra’, Patnaik said Odisha was passing through a difficult phase and raised concerns over issues ranging from education and social security to farmers’ welfare and law and order.

“Children do not have books, elderly people are not getting pensions, while farmers and women are facing difficulties,” Patnaik alleged.

The former Odisha Chief Minister also criticised the prevailing law-and-order situation in the state and alleged mismanagement in several areas, including Rath Yatra, flood relief and examinations.

Patnaik further targeted the government over mining-related issues, alleging that Odisha’s rights over its mineral resources were being compromised.

Opposition parties, including the BJD, have been protesting against the amended mining law, arguing that it curtails the rights and financial interests of mineral-rich states.

He also alleged that while the Odisha government and the state’s 20 Lok Sabha MPs remained silent over the state’s interests, they were ready to speak for mine owners.

Patnaik further claimed that the state’s revenue was declining, budgetary funds were not being adequately spent and Odisha’s debt burden was increasing.

Taking a dig at the government, the BJD president said people were saying that the present dispensation had “specialised in mismanagement.”

The Jana Samparka Padayatra, launched on October 2, is scheduled to continue until November 2 across Odisha. BJD leaders and workers will undertake the public outreach campaign in rural and urban areas across the state.
