46 Cadres of banned insurgent group surrender in Manipur, lay down 28 weapons

New delhi: In a major breakthrough for security forces in Manipur, 46 active cadres of the banned Kangleipak Communist Party surrendered before Y. Khemchand Singh at the Mantripukhri Garrison in Imphal East district.

In a significant setback for the outlawed Kangleipak Communist Party (People’s War Group) [KCP (PWG)], 46 active cadres of the banned outfit laid down their  arms.

The group of 46 surrendered before a high-level team of Assam Rifles, Manipur Police and state government officers during a solemn function.

During the surrender, the rebels piled up 28 sophisticated weapons ranging from AK, INSAS, Self-loading rifles, carbines, pistols to a rocket-propelled grenade launcher along with ammunition and explosives.

The officials said this was the largest single-day surrender by the outfit in years and had come due to sustained coordinated operations between Assam Rifles, state police and other security forces.

State government initiatives to provide a boost to the surrender drive are also said to have played a major role.

The security forces believed the surrenders will greatly hamper the fighting capacity of the militant group and spur further surrender from other active members of the organization.

The government has also pledged to facilitate the reintegration process for the surrendered cadre, assuring them that operations against other active insurgent groups would continue with renewed vigor in order to restore normalcy in the region.

It is hoped that this large-scale surrender would mark a crucial step towards lasting peace, stability and overall development of the region.
