Drug-Free Odisha Mission: Odisha Police destroys over 64.8 metric tonnes of seized cannabis

Cuttack: The Odisha Police has achieved great success in its ongoing “Drug-Free Odisha Mission” to make the state completely drug-free. Under the ongoing state-wide special ‘Drug Eradication Operation,’ a total of more than 64.8 metric tonnes (64,816.17 kg) of seized cannabis has been destroyed till 2 July 2026. This massive operation is being successfully carried out under the direct supervision of the Special Task Force of the CID Crime Branch.

According to the report, a total of 78,600.68 kg of seized cannabis was identified for destruction in this special operation. Out of this, 64,816.17 kg of ganja has been successfully destroyed, while the target is to completely destroy the remaining 13,784.22 kg of ganja by 10 July 2026.

Kandhamal district is at the top of the list in this campaign, destroying the maximum 31,445.40 kg of seized ganja.

Among other districts, Boudh district has destroyed 16,127 kg, Malkangiri 8,969.94 kg, Gajapati 3,116 kg and Bargarh district 1,306 kg of ganja.

Malkangiri, Gajapati, Koraput, Balangir, Mayurbhanj, Bargarh, Balasore, Keonjhar, SRP Rourkela and Sundergarh districts have achieved their targets in the field of drug eradication.

In this context, a ‘National Level Pre-Trial Drug Destruction Special Drive’ was recently organized at the Police Bhawan in Bhubaneswar. This special drive is being conducted across the country from June 26 to July 10, 2026, to expedite the process of destruction of seized drugs before trial, as per the instructions of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Government of India.

Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania has given special priority to intensify the fight against illegal drug trafficking and smuggling in the state. “Our campaign against illegal drug trafficking, smuggling and drug mafia will become more extensive and stringent in the coming days. Odisha Police will always maintain a ‘zero tolerance’ policy against lawbreakers. We are determined to build a drug-free, safe and empowered Odisha through coordinated enforcement, use of modern technology, active cooperation of the public and strong determination.”
