Notably, several incidents of elephant deaths have been reported from different parts of Odisha in recent months.
In September 2026, the decomposed carcass of a three-year-old elephant calf was recovered from Raipiri Reserve Forest under Jarda range in Sundargarh district’s Bonai forest division. Preliminary findings suggested that the calf had become separated from its herd and was suffering from illness before its death. Forest officials launched an investigation to determine the exact cause.
Similarly, in July 2026, a 25-year-old tusker was found dead near Bompa village under Hindol forest range in Dhenkanal district. Forest officials suspected that the elephant might have died after being struck by lightning during heavy rainfall. However, the exact cause was awaiting confirmation through the postmortem report.
