Bhubaneswar: Active Moonsoon has brought rainfall along with thunderstorm to several districts of Odisha on Monday. Twin cities of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar along with the naearby areas were drenched by the season’s first significant monsoon showers this morning.

The city residents got relief from the intense humidity with the arrival of the sudden rain.

The delayed arrival of the Monsoon had caused deficient rainfall across the state, making the farmers in worry about their crops. Now, as the Monsoon has began to revive, bringing in rainfall, the farmers have heaved a sigh of relief, hoping the downpour will fill up the large deficit of rainfall in the state in June. Notably, Odisha received 45% deficit rain in June this year.

After being weak in the initial phase, now the southwest monsoon has shown signs of being active again. Meanwhile, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has announced that the south-west monsoon is likely to get activated again from Tuesday.

According to the Meteorological Department, the monsoon will intensify in the state between June 23 and 25. Under the influence of Monsoon, the coastal, north and south Odisha districts might receive more rainfall. Meanwhile, some places will likely receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers with scattered thunderstorms are likely from June 26 to July 2.

Under the shifting weather conditions, the department has predicted rain along with thunderstorm across several regions in the state over the next five days under the influence of Kalbaisakhi.

Coastal and southern Odisha are expected to experience rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning on Monday. An orange warning has been issued specifically for three districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada. Heavy downpour is expected to lash Koraput. Similarly, a yellow alert has been issued for the remaining 27 districts.

Storm and rainfall alerts were also issued for Keonjhar, Deogarh, Jagatsinghpur, Nayagarh, Puri, and Khordha districts.

Southern Odisha may encounter heavy rainfall alongside wind speeds prevailing between 50 and 60 kilometres per hour. People have been requested not to go out during thunderstorms and to take shelter in safe places.

Despite the rain, the Meteorological Centre noted that hot and humid conditions will persist across coastal areas.

For Tuesday, the Regional Meteorological Centre has placed the entire state under a yellow warning. Heavy rainfall has been predicted for Gajapati and Ganjam districts as the active monsoon system transitions across the region.

Due to the effect of El Nino, the monsoon flow was weak this year, which has increased concerns for Kharif farming and paddy harvesting. Between June 1 and 17, Odisha recorded only 51 mm of rainfall instead of the normal rainfall of 91.4 mm. Which is a deficit of about 44 to 46 percent.

The rainfall deficiency is highest in the districts of western and interior Odisha, ranging from 50% to 85%. Similarly, the coastal Puri district has also seen a 65% reduction in rainfall.
