New Delhi: An Indian-origin man accused of murdering his wife in Virginia, United States, has admitted in court that he cut up her body using a saw but denied killing her.

Thirty-nine-year-old Naresh Bhatt, the accused, claimed that his 28-year-old wife Mamta Kafle Bhatt committed suicide by taking poisonous insecticide tablets and then told the court in early hours of July 30, 2024, at his home.

Bhatt said he tried to revive his wife, roving her back and forth for close to an hour before realizing she was dead. He said he was scared and panicked when he didn’t call authorities right away. He told the court he first thought about throwing her body into the Potomac River and then decided he should put it in trash bags instead.

Bhatt additionally confessed that he used a saw to chop his spouse into smaller components since her body could not fit inside the trash canister. Bhatt said he didn’t kill her.

Mamta was reported missing on August 5, 2024, when she did not report to work. Bhatt was detained on August 22, 2024, when police allegedly discovered bloodstains at their residence and hair fragments in a power saw.

Her body has not been recovered. Bhatt has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, concealing a dead body and defiling a body.

The murder charge carries a possible life sentence.
